ytd my student threw a farewell barbeque for himself.
and on my way there... i was assigned a very important task. amazing task.
buy supplies. and the list... as follows.
- Plastic utensils (forks, spoons)
- Plastic plates
- Plastic cups
- Oil
- Honey
- Butter
- Sticks
- Serviettes
- 3 bottles of coke
- 3 bottles of water
- Garbage bags
haha like who has a barbeque without these things? could've been MY barbeque instead. haha.
haha so cute la, these teenagers. then they kept saying "teacher, eat". haha.
oh well. very interesting how the kids of different nationalities communicate. and they're quite closely knit. wonder how these friendships will work out... cos they're all gg to take different paths in the near future. entering into goverment schools, returning to their home country, etc.
kinda sad though. to hear that they try so hard, but still can't pass their school placement tests.
and there's this kid. he's got his singapore PR, and will be 18 next yr. it's bad. his english is really bad, he takes longer than any kid in my (kids) class to do a comprehension, and even then, he doesnt get his answers correct.
so, for his age, he has to take a sec 3 placement test. he can't take any other (lower) levels. and he can't do sec 3 english! (and im not being mean). but the thing is, he cannot do sec 3 english and because he's gonna be 18 next yr, if he's not enrolled in any government sch, he has to go into army.
which will be worse for him because by the time he gets out of army, he'll be 20. and he will be... quite stuck, i'd say. it's sad seeing stories like these. it's not tt he's not tried/trying. but he just can't... and i dunno how i can help him.
and then there are issues like parents feeling a "loss of face" and things like that. sigh. and the worries about getting into the schools they have to. getting that education that they so need to have to take them places.
the harsh realities of life. seeing them like that gives me heartache.
so i didnt really have that smooth an educational life, but nxt to them, i feel so blessed to be in Singapore.
yes, i will count my blessings.
